Training is an important part of any organisation’s ongoing efforts to maximise productivity. However, even as many spend huge portions of their budgets on training, they may not get the full benefit of that investment.
Why? Because many in-house trainers don’t know how to connect with the intended audience in a way that ensures their message not only comes across, but also truly sinks in. It may only take a few tweaks to your current processes to help your trainers make the most of their efforts, including the following:
1) Provide plenty of supplementary materials
You can teach for hours, but it’s not always going to sink in if you are not also providing documents before, during and after that supplement what you’re trying to train your employees with. The Balance Careers explained that you can reinforce all the lessons you’re trying to impart with a little bit of written material that you distribute to all participants. This can underscore — or even expand on — the key aspects of your efforts.
2) Train the trainers
It’s not enough to simply provide the your training facilitators with the learning plan they should follow. They typically need to be taught how to make their sessions more effective, so that they can get across more information in a shorter amount of time, and do a better job of helping it connect with your employees. A little bit of extra training on this front will go a long way toward boosting the effectiveness of all training efforts going forward.
3) Set expectations early
As people come into any training, it can be helpful to let them know what you want them to take away from the entire session or course, according to HR Daily Advisor. That way, they will be more attuned to the intricacies of what you’re trying to teach, and more likely to go in with the proper mindset.
4) Give and receive summaries of what you’re teaching
You don’t want to get into a situation where your trainers talk for an hour straight and then say, “Any questions?” The things you said at the beginning of that hour could feel like distant memories, even if they’re important, and employees may not circle back to them. Instead, it’s a good idea to summarise what you’ve been discussing every 10 or 15 minutes and take questions at that point, so nothing is overlooked.
5) Don’t just lecture
One of the best ways to ensure that you’re getting the right lessons across is to make your trainings interactive.
